Welcome to the MassDevice Fast Five medtech news podcast, the show that keeps you up-to-date on the latest breakthroughs in medical technology. Here’s what you need to know for today, August 11, 2023.
In this episode, Fast Five hosts Sean Whooley and Danielle Kirsh break down some of the second-quarter highlights for Insulet as it continues to report impressive revenue growth. The automated insulin delivery technology developer offered even more optimism for the rest of the year, raising its guidance as sales of the Omnipod system are taking off. There’s also promising news on the product side as Insulet recently shared an update on the progress of the Omnipod’s integration with a popular continuous glucose monitor.
Meanwhile, Imperative Care has a new organizational structure, breaking up its business arms into four siloed operating units. The stroke care company is now the parent company for units that cover vascular, digital and robotic medical technologies in an effort to connect innovation and provide meaningful outcomes to patients across the entire continuum of care.
There’s also more news on the ablation front, as China-based Baird Medical announced the submission of its disposable microwave ablation needle to the FDA for 510(k) clearance. The system, which already has authorization in China, is seen as a potential alternative to open surgery, radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation.
A proven spine implant from ZimVie can now potentially treat even more patients with a new FDA approval for the Mobi-C cervical disc. The implant, which has been on the U.S. market for about a decade, is now offered in smaller heights to address the anatomical needs of patients. Doctors called the implant “an important addition to the Mobi-C lineup, saying that it enables greater flexibility for surgeons.
Finally, we discuss a fundraising effort from calcified cardiovascular disease treatment developer Shockwave Medical. The company announced a private offering worth $500 million. With rumors swirling earlier this year about potential big names in medtech having interest in acquiring Shockwave, the company itself listed acquisitions as a potential use of its proceeds, although Shockwave said it currently has no commitments or specific plans on that front.
